TEACHING

During pedagogical activity, more specifically the assimilation of new material by the students, the teacher should follow the principles of consistency, gradualness and progress visibility. The whole process of learning should be based on the principle "from simple to complex" and take the individual characteristics of each student into account; for example: their physical characteristics, or the level of their musical abilities. During the learning process the teacher should take the necessary time to solve a number of technical, musical, artistic and educational issues.

Technical issues: Given the specificity of the clarinet, the teacher should initially provide the student with a good basic concept of the correct formulation of the embouchure and all the technical skills related to the general posture of the instrument, as any flaws or defects will slow down the general development of the student. Control of breathing, articulation and legato is of central importance in order to develop the ability of correct employment of various musical styles. Knowledge of new clarinet performing techniques such as circular breathing and double staccato will have the desired effect of facilitating learning of the clarinet repertoire, orchestral repertoire and, in particular, contemporary music, which is of high importance for clarinetists nowadays.

Musical and artistic issues: Musical and artistic problems can be discussed together since they influence each other. The student should be familiar with a full range of musical styles, which will directly influence the development of his/her musical personality.

As the clarinet is an instrument often used in chamber music and orchestra, group playing between students should be encouraged. A focus on orchestral repertoire and encouraging students to prepare for any concerts, orchestral auditions and national or international music contests will be helpful.

Educational issues: While it may be true that there are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going, there certainly are ways of needlessly prolonging the journey with an ineffective practicing method. We often waste lots of time because nobody ever taught us the most effective and efficient way to practice. Whether it's learning how to code, improving your writing skills, or playing a musical instrument, practicing the right way can mean the difference between good and great.
